Doug Lawyer-Smith

Founder & CEO

Play. Learn. Respect … This has been the Lawyer-Smith family motto for 25 years, and it also guides my career. I play fair and want my job to be fun and exciting. I learn from each of my personal and professional experiences and strive to incorporate that knowledge into new experiences. I want to respect the people I work with because of their high integrity.

I started my career at Cummins after graduating from Indiana University with a BS in Accounting and a minor in German. Prior to founding SweetWork, I also spent time in public accounting and consulting with Arthur Andersen, Ernst & Young, MarketSphere (now Grant Thornton), and RGP. I have invested over 25 years in business consulting helping clients better their people, processes, and technology. The most fulfilling part of my career has always been connecting with my clients and my colleagues to understand what they are trying to accomplish and how I can help. At my core, I seek to understand and solve.  I have developed and delivered all types of training courses, including change management, internal controls, system implementations, team building, software packages, sales management, client service, accounting concepts, and soft skills.

My wife, Margie, and I grew up in Columbus, Indiana, and we have been together since we were 18 years old.  She is an attorney with the Office of the Attorney General of Indiana.  We live in Indianapolis with our children, Eli and Tess, who are college students.  We have hosted three exchange students from Germany and love having a full house of people for any occasion.

Eli Lawyer-Smith

Director of Operations

As a junior in Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business, I have been exposed to different areas of business and have narrowed my career interests. I plan to graduate with majors in Accounting and Business Analytics, along with a minor in German.

During the summer after my freshman year, I interned at RGP as a part of the Client Development Team. From an operations standpoint, I used Salesforce, UiPath, and Excel on a daily basis to track a number of initiatives from our three Client Service Directors.

The following summer I was a Finance and Accounting Intern at Herff Jones. I helped the Accounts Payable and Receivables teams by using Oracle to input and extract data. For SweetWork, I set up our CRM (Pipedrive) and I manage our accounting and banking systems to enable the rest of the team to focus on serving clients.
